Airservices is a government-owned corporation providing safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible services to the aviation industry. We manage air traffic operations for around 75 million passengers on more than three million flights every year.

How will CDM affect me?

CDM allows all users, including aircraft operators, airports, ground handlers and air traffic control to be aware of constraints, issues and needs of other users and service providers. CDM also has benefits for the community.

The overall effect of CDM is a more knowledgeable and participative aviation community that improves services and reduces costs for all users and providers.

Aircraft operators, Airport authorities and other affected stakeholders can obtain relevant departure and arrival information via web-based access to the Metron Traffic Flow Tool.

Aircraft Operators

CDM will enable you to:

  • improve planning and resource utilisation through better (and more accurate) information sharing
  • recover more quickly from adverse conditions
  • save costs through reduced fuel burn and aircraft maintenance
  • improve planning at a network level
  • provide a more predictable and reliable service
  • achieve higher on-time performance
  • reduce airborne delays
  • reduce emissions

How?

Reduced costs and emissions come from reduced fuel burn, plus less airframe flight time, which also leads to less maintenance costs.

Ground staff are also more productive because aircraft arrival times are known well in advance – there is no waiting at the gate for an aircraft to arrive and no aircraft waiting for ground staff to arrive.

Predictability is increased because ground delay times will be known well in advance. For multiple aircraft operations, operators will have the ability to swap aircraft arrival times to ensure that critical flights are not adversely affected.

Airports

CDM will enable you to:

  • reduce tarmac and terminal (gate) congestion
  • improve planning and resource utilisation through better (and more accurate) information sharing
  • increase airport capacity
  • have a more predictable demand for airport resources
  • improve customer understanding of constraints

How?

Accurate aircraft arrival and departure times allow airports to use their round services better. Gate usage will be more predictable in both the short term and the long term and shared knowledge of airport operations can help make critical assets more efficient in peak periods.

Air Traffic Control

CDM will enable you to:

  • improve planning and resource utilisation through better (and more accurate) information sharing
  • recover more quickly from adverse traffic management conditions
  • enhance trust and understanding with partners
  • handle a more predictable workload
  • increase airspace capacity and efficiency

Community

CDM will also have benefits for the broader community, including;

  • fewer airborne delays
  • a reduction in aviation emissions
  • improved safety

During the introduction of a ground-based delay system at Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth airports, air travellers may experience a change in the way airlines, airports and air traffic controllers manage the inevitable delays which can impact air travel.

These delays may be caused by weather, congestions and a range of other factors.

The introduction of CDM will see some aircraft held at their departure airport longer, rather than departing ‘on time’ only to incur air traffic delays in the air.

Aircraft won’t depart an airport until they have a confirmed arrival time, at their destination airport. Transferring delays from the air to the ground reduces aviation emissions and allows airports and airlines to better manage operational considerations and resume on time operations sooner.
