Tower refurbishment – life extension program
The upgrading and refurbishment of ageing air traffic control tower buildings is a component of Airservices National Towers Program.
The initial phase of the life extension upgrade project involved site surveys, heritage, building condition and property assessments, airport planning and stakeholder consultation.
The upgraded towers will be designed with a minimum building lifespan of approximately 15 to 20 years. While the requirements for each tower will vary, the project will provide modern, safe and efficient control tower facilities that enhance the safety of airport operations and meet future service requirements.
The project will incorporate environmentally sustainable design principles including water and energy efficiency measures, waster management and selection of green products and finishes. The upgraded facilities will be designed to help accommodation the new, modern and efficient tower technology to be delivered.
Gold Coast Tower refurbishment
Airservices has begun work to refurbish and upgrade the control tower at Gold Coast Airport. The work is part of a program to modernise and upgrade 28 operational air traffic control towers and systems across the country.
The program will replace ageing mechanical electrical, security and fire services with modern energy-efficient systems including the installation of new ecologically sustainable items such as rain water tanks and energy-efficient plumbing and lighting systems.
The project will also prepare the tower for the fitment of new state-of-the-art air traffic control systems which will enhance safety and efficiency across the entire air traffic control network.
The work on the Gold Coast tower is expected to be completed by February 2012.
